Buffer alternatives by price in 2026: free, under $50 and under $100 a month

Leaving Buffer because its inbox covers comments but not DMs? Six alternatives compared on price, inbox and DMs, with prices checked October 2026.

By Tools Ledger staff7 min read

Buffer costs $5 a channel a month on annual billing (August 2026), and its Community inbox covers comments but not DMs (direct messages). If you want DMs in the same inbox, Metricool has one on its free plan and Pallyy's starts at $25 a month, or $20 billed yearly (October 2026). BetterSocials is for owners whose comments and DMs bring in customers, and it adds keyword DMs and AI replies from $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts.

We sorted six alternatives into three price bands by the yearly price of the cheapest plan that includes an inbox. Within the under-$50 band, the inbox that covers the most platforms comes first. Each price carries the month it was seen, and we correct this page in place when a price changes. Updated October 27, 2026.

Who should leave Buffer, and which price band fits

Buffer Essentials is $5 a channel a month on annual billing, per Buffer's pricing page as seen in August 2026. Its Community inbox works on every plan and reads YouTube comments. It covers comments only, so Instagram and Facebook DMs stay in the phone app.

Stay on Buffer if you mostly schedule posts and answer a few comments by hand. For that job, $5 a channel is a small bill.

Leave when DMs start bringing in customers and you want them next to your comments. An inbox, in this list, means one screen that collects the comments and DMs from your connected accounts. The bands run from free to under $100 a month.

Hootsuite and Sprout Social sit above this page. Their inboxes start on Standard at $99 per user and $199 per seat a month, both billed annually (October 2026), which prices them for teams rather than one owner.

Free: Metricool keeps an inbox on its free plan

Metricool is the pick for owners who want an inbox without paying more than Buffer. Its inbox starts on the free plan and reads YouTube comments there too (August 2026). The free plan holds one brand and up to 20 scheduled posts a month.

Starter is $25 a month, or $20 billed yearly, for five brands, per Metricool's pricing as seen in October 2026. LinkedIn joins the inbox on Starter. Metricool prices by brand rather than by channel, so count your brands before you count your accounts.

Metricool's gap is automation. It has no keyword automation, so a comment can't send your link by DM, and it has no email inbox.

Under $50 a month: BetterSocials for comments, DMs and keyword DMs

BetterSocials is best for owners whose comments and DMs bring in customers and who want keyword DMs and AI replies. It posts to six platforms: Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, TikTok and LinkedIn. Its inbox holds Instagram and Facebook comments and DMs, TikTok comments and DM replies, and YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Page comments.

Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts (October 2026). Contacts are unlimited on every plan, and nothing is billed per contact.

Buffer is cheaper per channel: four Buffer channels cost 4 x $5 = $20 a month on annual billing, against $24 for Creator's four accounts, and six cost $30 against $39 for Pro. The few dollars a month between them buy the DM inbox, AI replies drafted in your voice and keyword comment-to-DM. Whether that's worth it depends on how many of your customers write in by DM.

Comment-to-DM means a keyword in a comment sends that person a DM with your link. BetterSocials does it on Instagram and Facebook with no flow builder. On TikTok and YouTube the keyword posts a public reply with the link, because no tool can turn a comment there into a private DM.

The AI replies to comments and DMs, with a separate setting for each. On Draft for me, nothing posts until you approve it; on Reply in my voice, everyday replies go out on their own and questions wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too. DM replies cover Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.

There's no free plan, the 7-day trial needs a card, and X and email can't be connected. If you'd rather keep Buffer and add keyword DMs, ManyChat Pro is $29 a month billed yearly, or $39 month to month, for 2,500 active contacts (July 2026). Six Buffer channels plus ManyChat Pro come to $30 + $29 = $59 a month on annual billing, and ManyChat doesn't post for you.

Under $50 a month: Pallyy adds Google reviews to the inbox

Pallyy is best for local businesses that want DMs and Google reviews in one inbox on a small budget. Its inbox starts on Pro at $25 a month, or $20 billed yearly (October 2026).

Pallyy Pro's inbox covers Instagram DMs and comments, Facebook messages and comments, LinkedIn comments, TikTok comments and Google reviews. YouTube isn't in it, so a YouTube channel's comments stay in YouTube. If YouTube matters to you, Metricool and BetterSocials both bring its comments into the inbox.

Under $50 a month: Later's Conversations start on Growth

Later is best for brands that work mostly on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. Its Conversations inbox covers Instagram DMs and comments, Facebook DMs and comments and TikTok comments. It starts on Growth at $50 a month, or $37.50 billed yearly (October 2026), so Later fits this band only on yearly billing.

Starter, at $25 a month or $18.75 billed yearly, sits below the plan where Conversations start. Scale is $110 a month, or $82.50 billed yearly. Later has no YouTube or LinkedIn conversations.

Under $100 a month: Agorapulse for a shared team inbox

Agorapulse is best for teams that share one inbox and pay per seat. It puts one combined inbox on every tier, so the cheapest plan already has it. Standard is $79 per user a month on annual billing (July 2026).

Agorapulse stays under $100 a month for one user only. A second user doubles the bill to 2 x $79 a month. Email isn't in its channel list.

Under $100 a month: Vista Social pairs its inbox with DM automations

Vista Social is best for small teams that want a full inbox plus DM automations. Its Professional plan pairs a social inbox with DM automations and includes two users, at $99 a month or $80 billed yearly (October 2026).

Two users on Vista Social Professional cost $80 a month billed yearly, while two users on Agorapulse Standard cost twice its $79 per-user rate. The 14-day trial needs no card. Email isn't a channel in Vista Social.

FAQ

Is there a cheaper alternative to Buffer that replies to comments?

Metricool is the cheapest: its inbox starts on the free plan, which holds one brand and up to 20 scheduled posts a month. Pallyy's inbox starts on Pro at $25 a month, or $20 billed yearly. Buffer answers comments too, so check whether you need DMs before you switch.

Does Buffer's inbox handle DMs?

No. Buffer's Community inbox covers comments on every plan, YouTube comments included, but not DMs (August 2026). Instagram and Facebook messages stay in the phone app. Pallyy, Later and BetterSocials put Instagram DMs in their inboxes, and Vista Social pairs its inbox with DM automations.

Does any Buffer alternative send a DM when someone comments a keyword?

Yes. BetterSocials sends your link by DM when someone comments a keyword on Instagram or Facebook, and Vista Social has DM automations from Professional. Meta Business Suite has a free keyword comment-to-message for Facebook and Instagram that sends a template you write, set up on desktop (July 2026). On TikTok and YouTube, no tool can turn a comment into a private DM.

What do you lose when you leave Buffer?

You mostly lose the low per-channel price. Buffer is $5 a channel on annual billing, so four channels cost $20 a month against $24 billed yearly for BetterSocials Creator's four accounts, and six cost $30 against $39 for Pro. If your inbox is mostly comments, that saving is the reason to stay.

How do you move from Buffer to another tool?

Connect each social account in the new tool before you cancel Buffer. In BetterSocials, each account connects on the platform's own sign-in screen in under a minute. Connecting your accounts, setting one keyword and approving a few drafts takes about ten minutes.

Who should stay on Buffer?

Stay on Buffer if you mostly schedule posts and answer a few comments by hand. At $5 a channel on annual billing, it does that job for a small bill. Move when DMs start bringing in customers and you want them in the same inbox as your comments.
